Over 85% of the students in our school come from families who struggle daily to make ends meet, but they certainly do not lack in kindness and perseverance and a joy for life. They are silly, cute, hard-working, and appreciative. They are huggers. However, because our families worry about providing the day to day basics of life, splurging on expensive new hardcover books, e-readers or iPads is just not a reality. That is why we see many of our students lacking at-home libraries. Although we have already started a community book drive to obtain books as cheaply as possible and get them into the hands of our students, we would also like to purchase some new titles. There's nothing quite like a nice, shiny, new book and although used books work fine too, we don't want our students to feel like they are always receiving someone else's castoffs. Please consider putting the lifelong gift of literacy in our students' hands.
