Many of my students will never have the opportunity to play an instrument when they leave me at the end of 5th grade. I want my students to learn to play the ukulele, an instrument that they can see themselves playing later on in life. There is only so far that learning to play rhythm sticks or maracas can take you. I learned to play the ukulele not to long ago and my kids love when I play it while they are singing. This will also encapsulate all of the musical learning they have had (reading music, rhythm, dynamic markings, etc). My students love music class and for some of them who struggle academically, this is the place that they know they can shine.
