Our amazing school community services students in grades 3 through 5. Nearly every student receives free or reduced price lunch. They children are so excited to come to school each day but often they do not have access to the basic materials that all children need for the beginning of the school year. Each September when we send home the school supply list with our children we are never sure exactly how much that the families will be able to help out with. Although some children will bring in some materials, many others simply cannot. This makes for a very challenging first couple of weeks of school. While we teach that sharing is awesome, it can be very difficult to do so when the children are shy and barely know each other. Worse yet, the children who cannot afford to bring in the materials often feel self-conscious and embarrassed. NOT the best way to start off the year and create a class family that emphasizes how valuable each and every student is.
