My kids come from a high poverty area in the Mid-West. Many do not have books in their homes, and can not get to the public library due to a lack in transportation. They love books once we find one that fits their personality. About half of our classroom, is reading at least one year below grade level. Since the kids on are different levels, we need things to do that are on different levels, while I meet with small groups. They try very hard and want to do well, but we need more interesting centers for literacy.
