My students are very energetic and love to play instruments. I am the Music Teacher to approximately 350 students at a wonderful K-5 Title 1 elementary school. A lot of our families struggle to make ends meet financially. Many of my students speak English as a second language, so language is a struggle for them. Playing instruments and reading rhythms does not have a lot to do with written or spoken English so all kids can feel successful no matter what language skills they have. They like learning new things, especially if it relates to things they do or see at home. Some of their favorite songs on the radio can actually be used to teach them the skills they need. These songs can be used as incentives to learn certain notes, rhythms, finger positions, or even the form of a song (the order of the parts of a song).
