I have worked in a lower economic district in NY for 10 years. The population is 80% Hispanic/Haitian (20% lived here less than a year) and 20% African American. Teaching these children has taught me so much. They are motivated to learn and want to succeed. They know their parents work hard to support them and want to learn so they can one day help the family as well. Building vocabulary of English language learners is essential. My students look forward to the science fair every year. It is four weeks of hands on fun. Pictures are taken throughout the process of learning. The highlight of the pm. event is the sideshow. Parents who don't normally participate in school events, or even parent conferences, show up for this annual event. Unfortunately, most families take a taxi or walk to school, which is inconvenient and costly. Parents also work several jobs and missing work means no pay.
