Our school is a Title I funded school which translates to 75% of the student population falling into the economic disadvantaged category. My students have never entered a dance studio or had any formal training in dance at all. Their parents lack the financial structure to afford them dance lessons, but that does not stop them from dancing their hearts out on my dance floor. When they walk into my class they greet me with a smile, excited to open their minds and hearts to the choreography they are about to absorb. The Caviler Girls Dance Team is in its first year of existence, yet our program has captured the attention of faculty members and the community with our accomplishments. We have performed monthly throughout the school year and are scheduled to dance at the halftime game of the Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics on April 12, 2013. Being able to showcase their dance talents provides an internal motivation to higher dreams while maintaining, or establishing for others, a 2.5 grade point average. This domino effect results in better grades, higher scores, and a positive morale throughout the school. Regardless of their social or economic hardship, dance class provides a refuge where their minds can live dormant from life difficulties. My students are diligent workers and deserve the best.
