I work in a high poverty school and I work hard to make the classroom a comfortable and inviting space. For some students, school is a much more inviting place than their own homes. I want a classroom space that is not only inviting but also allows my students to learn in a way that is comfortable and best suits their individual needs. This year I have a group that really needs some alternative seating options and movement. Many students prefer to work on the floor, and any space that is not a traditional seating setup. The carpet will really help give students an alternative to sitting in a desk as well as provide a large space for the students to stretch out and work in a way that is comfortable. Right now the students just gather on the hard tile floor. I have quite a few students who just need to move while they work to increase their focus in the classroom. Several will stand up behind their chairs or kneel in their chairs. This can be distracting. I would like to add stability balls and wobble chairs as a way for these students to move but remain in a seated position to minimize the distractions to the other students.
