Our students are wonderful students who as I mentioned above face many challenges. There are no organizations for them to participate in after school as other students around the city have. Some of the centers have been shut because of the hurricane. Making matters worse, the neighborhood is high in violence and gang-related activity and many parents fear for their child's safety after school. Our PE program affords them unique opportunities to learn new sports and be part of their school, which for many is a second home. Their participation gives them pride and helps them focus on their studies as we tie in team participation to grades. Our PE and afterschool sports program has had a tremendous impact of many of our students. Some who had never played a sport have found a love for an activity that they will carry with them for life.
