Books about pride, respect and self-reliance are what my middle school resource students would like to read. Our public school is located in a high poverty inner city neighborhood. Over 95% of the students in this building receive free and or reduced lunch. However, that has not stopped our students from having hopes and dreams of receiving a college education. They love reading, and have a thirst for knowledge. Over and over again students have stated they wanted books about children who looked like them and stories that are real (their words, not mine). Both of the books I have requested are high interest books that I know our children will love. Both books have won the Coretta Scott King Book Award proving that they are well written. These books will be a welcome addition to our class library.
