My students have a variety of disabilities that make learning very challenging. Retention of skills is very low for all of my students, so repetitive skill work takes place daily. This includes functional math, reading, writing, social skills, and weekly cooking. My students love to cook. They get to choose the meals that they will be preparing every week. We often invite the principal and other staff to enjoy the meals prepared by the class as guests into the room. This helps to foster relationships outside the classroom for my students. The more chances they have to be part of society and help build tolerance, the greater our community becomes. Our school has been great in building these kinds of relationships. The school has promoted this to make sure they are included as often as possible in daily activities. This ensures my students can be viewed as regular kids, not just students with major disabilities and challenges.
