Our middle school houses the Autism program for our school district. I have six students with moderate Autism in my self-contained classroom. I have students that can communicate verbally and others that require a communication device to share their wants and needs. The students work on skills to assist them in becoming as independent as possible. We focus activities around improving their gross and fine motor skills. Due to their unique educational needs, they require a curriculum that teaches self-care skills such as hand washing and personal grooming. They are taught basic survival/functional words and self-help skills such as zipping and buttoning coats. The students work on spelling and writing their names, vocational skills such as sorting and assembling, and communicating their wants and needs appropriately. They take great pride when they master a skill and completing a task independently.
