I am an Occupational Therapist that works with students K-5, some of whom happen to have profound visual perceptual deficits that hinder their ability to read printed text. This powerful assistive technology not only normalizes their reading experience but also has a profound positive psychosocial impact, as it boosts students' self-esteem and self-reliance. Audiobooks and digitized books only provide a narrow degree of exposure to knowledge. Furthermore, the motor components embedded in reading a book (i.e., holding it, turning the pages, etc.) provides a kinesthetic input that promotes retention/recall (memory of what has been read). Hence, the importance of providing assisted meaningful exposure to the knowledge available only in printed textbooks.
