Most of my brilliant scholars come from single-parent, low income families. They attend an International Baccalaureate public high school in a large urban school district in Indiana. A big part of the IB program is Community and Service. Even though most of the scholars receive free lunch and books, they have learned to see the importance of helping others. They stay after school and get together on weekends to volunteer in the neighborhood to help plan, work and clean up at neighborhood association events. They are currently seeking funds to open a digital recording studio in our school to assist small ethnic businesses design their own websites for advertising. Currently only about 15% of the over 70 ethnic restaurants and businesses have websites, missing out on a huge consumer marketing population. Our scholars take Spanish and/or Mandarin, and can assist in breaking some of the cultural barriers that exist in our community.
