At our Title 1 elementary school, we have begun to design and purchase books for a much needed leveled bookroom. The excitement that our teachers share about reading instruction has increased tremendously since undertaking this new addition. Furthermore, the teachers and staff have been amazed at the rate our student reading achievement has increased. The interest the students have shown in reading has been beyond any anticipation we had when we first started the bookroom. Students anxiously wait their turn to join a small group reading lesson. Additionally, students are now seemingly motivated about what they are reading in small group. Now that the enthusiasm of the book room has started gaining momentum at our Pre- K through 3rd grade school, we need a larger inventory of books for our teachers and students; our small bookroom needs to grow! The added materials to our collection will be utilized daily by teachers of all grade levels. Having a larger, school wide, leveled bookroom would create a feeling of ownership throughout the school because all teachers would be working together to utilize the same materials to improve student achievement. This bookroom would support teachers’ instructional practices and provide numerous quantities of books across diverse reading levels. Students would have access to a variety of complex texts. This is extremely beneficial because it will enable students to increase their fluency while the abundance of book choices would foster the reading styles and interests of all students. Teacher directed reading and independent reading will be made easier if a greater selection of book choices were made available to the students and staff of our school. With this addition to our current collection of resources, teachers will be able to continue to add lessons and best practices to the emerging library in our leveled bookroom.
