They are great kids with big hearts and huge dreams. Music helps them come alive in ways that for many of them, nothing else does. Many of them face huge challenges in their home lives that can be goal-stoppers. Every year I have students with a parent in jail, students in foster care, shelters, living with relatives, or students that are living with a single parent. They need a place where they are offered some consistency. The music classroom is that safe place for many of them; it's a place they come back to for all their elementary years. It's also a place where many of them discover that they have talents that lie outside of general academia. For most, music class is the one opportunity they have in their week to express their creativity
