Sometimes, the smallest change can make the biggest difference. For students with sensory needs, the world of education can be an over/under-stimulating place. To give these students what they need to show the world their brilliance, we need to increase their access by including sensory tools, modified seating and hands-on literacy to help them embrace their neurodiversity and get all of their sensory needs met! Ignacio Estrada famously said, "If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn," and that's something I think about every single day. All children are capable of learning, but we have to meet them where they are and with the tools they need to succeed. The tools we give our students can mean the difference between frustration and success. I truly believe that every child is a unique learner, but for some of my students, that amazing uniqueness also means that "standard" simply won't cut it. The average classroom chair isn't made to fit every student; some kids need a seat that gives them sensory input, like a ball seat or a wobble chair to move their body safely so they can attend to instruction. Give a student something to manipulate to keep hands busy, like a beanbag or squish ball, and the need to fiddle with learning materials is met while minds are still actively engaged in learning. Overwhelmed kids need safe outlets, like a cuddle ball! Literacy instruction is one of the single biggest things we do in elementary school, but it demands a lot of our learners. By giving students stories that engage their hands, minds, and hearts, like with the SEL story kit, we teach to the whole child.
