We are in the holiday spirit! My students have already written letters to local businesses, family, and friends for donations for the Elf Project. We will Skype from the "North Pole" to approximately 200 kindergarteners, make our list, shop wrap, and deliver. We want all funds raised to go toward gifts for the kindergarteners, but we also want to show our holiday spirit on delivery day by wearing our Santa hats. Memories last a lifetime and service is contagious! These Santa hats will be a keepsake for my students, reminding them yearly of the acts of kindness they performed in seventh grade. This is the fifth year I have done this project, and my students say it is just as special for them as it is for the students who receive the gifts. I ask before the project how many of them have felt that special feeling inside just from giving "the perfect gift" to someone; many say they don't know what I'm talking about. After the project, they tell me, "Now I get it!" Teenagers often are stereotyped as being all about themselves, but this project shows their giving hearts. Many go on to participate in many more service projects at school and in our community. I am proud to be "head elf" at my middle school!
