My students are amazing eighth graders. Although 90% of them qualify for free lunch, that never stops them from learning. The majority of the students are Hispanic in ethnicity, with non-English speaking parents. Our school is run on a shoe string budget where efficiency is valued above waste. Our school is a public school in a major urban city. Our Principal is always willing to accommodate but budgets only go so far. I have 35 students in my room for each math class and giving individual attention is difficult at best. However, with their great thirst for knowledge and my love of math, we always score above 85% on our standardized tests. I would love to see them have the same opportunities as schools with 18 in a class. My students deserve those same benefits and a few manipulatives would certainly be better than my empty tissue box or stale sugar cone.
