My students love project-based learning. Hands-on materials are very important for them, since it allows them to experience learning targets with all of their senses. My students all have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. Some of my students are blind. Many of them have limited mobility, and rely on the use of a wheelchair to get around. Cooking class is an opportunity for all of the students in my class to participate in life skills, math, and reading lessons in a meaningful, accessible way. Students who cannot see or speak are able to smell and identify materials that way. Students who are learning basic counting and one to one correspondence, are able to use numbers 1-10 to identify amounts that they then measure, giving them experiences of quantity, they can relate to meaningful life-skills activities. Additionally, we can teach lessons related to their home cultures by cooking traditional foods and by activating memories of their home experiences.
