My classroom's most important helper job is the Sadness Captain - and what a job it is! He/she is responsible for recognizing when peers are feeling sad, and putting his/her empathy to work to make the friend feel better. For many of my students, it is the first time they have been asked to think about and act upon others' feelings. It has been part of an amazing 6-week study on feelings. This year I am teaching in a full-day Dual Language PreK classroom. My students were individually recommended for placement in this program because they face very difficult circumstances in their homes: domestic abuse, maternal depression, extreme poverty, incarceration of a parent, and much more. The materials I am requesting will allow me to enhance and continue our in-depth study of feelings, and help us figure out how we can live and learn together in our classroom this year and for years to come.
