Students in my seventh and eighth grade classroom are introduced to all patterns of life, from discovering how they came to be with genetics/inheritance, how to become stewards of their local community environment, to learning strategies for protecting Earth's species for future generations. I have five science classes consisting of 30 to 37 very diverse students. Not only are they at different academic levels but they are also from numerous cultural backgrounds. Many are English learners. Our school is a Title I school with over 1000 students. Well over 50 percent qualify for the free breakfast/lunch program. A small healthy snack is provided after school in the afternoon. The school actively promotes a science/math STEAM curriculum and art electives that include orchestra, band, ethnic studies, along with drawing/painting classes.
