We are a low-income school on the south side of Chicago. As a school, students struggle with reading comprehension and find reading to be a task, rather than the exciting past time it is. In order to provide an activity for all students, no matter what their age, race, gender, or ability, I have created a Book Club to keep students safe, while instilling in them a love for reading. A lot of students at our school are struggling to find a place to fit in, especially if they don't fit into the athletic community. We really only have sports teams to help build a sense of community, so I wanted to reach out to those students who don't live and breathe basketball. I wanted to create a club that will accept any and all students, without having to turn any away because of certain limitations that may have excluded them from another team or activity. Several of my students are not introduced to the wealth of literature that I would love, so I am hoping to create that wealth for them one day at a time.
