My pre-k students love books. They love storytime, they love reading books in our classroom library, they love retelling their favorite stories, they love pretending the be the teacher as they proudly hold up a familiar book to read to their friends. Every morning and afternoon you will find my students sprawled across the classroom library turning the pages of their favorite books.
With these new books, my students will be introduced to classic authors of children's literature. My students will be introduced to the enriching vocabulary found in classic stories by Eric Carle, Leo Lionni, and Ezra Jack Keats. They will fall in love with the rhyming rhythm of their favorite Dr. Seuss books. They will spread out the big books by Bill Martin Jr. to retell his classic stories after reading them together during storytime. They will fall in love with Laura Numeroff's classic tales of cause and effect.
By introducing my young students to classic authors one at a time through author studies I hope to further develop their love of reading and their love of great literature. My students will be so excited to see the feature books during the author studies. They will be engaged in discussions about the stories, making comparisons between the stories, and talking about their favorite stories by each author. I am looking forward to my students going home at the end of the day excited to tell their families about the stories we read by the different auhtors and to encourage discussions about our authors and their stories at home as well.
