My classroom is the first school experience for many of my students. They are learning how to actively listen, sit on a rug, and follow directions. Due to their young age, they are not developmentally ready to sit still. However, just like students need to develop reading stamina, students also need to develop the ability to sit for periods of time. Sitting and actively listening are not skills that all students are developmentally ready to do without assistance. In order to learn, they need to be able to move their bodies while also focusing on what is being taught. Having fidgets, chewing jewelry, and wobble stools will help those students that need to be moving while listening, the opportunity to do so. The listening skills that are taught in my room are just as important as the academic skills that my students are learning. By having these tools, it will help my students be more active listeners. The skills they are learning will set them up to be successful for future years.
