Many of these students can listen to a read-aloud story or watch shows on television and retain a tremendous amount of interesting facts and information. Yet, these same bright, intelligent students struggle with remembering their basic letter sounds or with blending sounds to create words. While phonics readers help these students to build their decoding skills step by step, such stories provide limited interest to students who clearly thrive on higher interest, visually stimulating material. Fortunately, I was able to discover an online reading program that students could access at school or at home. It provides leveled reading selections with animation, which can be read to the student or which the student can read independently, especially as their skill level improves. However, my classroom has only one computer with which to access this online program. Moreover, many of my students can not afford internet access and can only use this program at school.
