When students in grades K-3 including children with special needs can create their own rhythmic sections on non-pitched percussion instruments in compositions like "The Baker" or "Rhythms of the Ocean" instead of just clapping out the patterns, they bring the elemental concept of timbre alive and create a cornucopia of sound. Working as a large group or in smaller pairs they can make informed decisions about what instruments to use to make the best outcome. Show a student a picture of an instrument and he might find it interesting, but put an instrument in his hands and he can use it to transform a musical activity into a magical masterpiece. The more available resources we have access to in the music classroom unleashes more opportunities for inspired creation and discovery.
