The supplies for the calm down kits will provide the students that I work with a variety of materials to help them. The students will have a choice of making their own putty to keep in their desks with them, a calm down glitter jar, or a calm down "I Spy" jar for when they are feeling overwhelmed, fidgety, or upset. Students have shown that with a variety of tools, they are able to calm down quicker independently. Before the students are able to make their tool, we discuss their own triggers, body signals to indicate that they are becoming elevated, and different calm down strategies that they find useful. After learning these skills, the students will be given the opportunity to create their own calm down kit with already supplied tools and a new tool from the supplies that are donated. Our hope is to help these students develop stronger coping skills to assist them throughout elementary school and life.
