My advisors are a group of motivated, enthusiastic, and idealistic 9th graders at a small, urban public school. They live in part of New York that is close to areas that were hard-hit by the recent storm, and they want to do something to help. They came up with the idea to make hats, mittens, and scarves, and then organized a bake sale to buy the fleece they needed. Students who are not in my class learned about the project and come in to help sew during lunch. Some teachers in my building have commented that the actions and effort of these students has been inspiring, and I must agree, I have always dreamed of having students who would take the initiative together to make the world a better place.
