I am a speech pathologist working with 62 students in 2 high schools. My students have all been identified as having a speech and/or language impairment. Many of them have accompanying disorders/disabilities that further impact their learning such as brain injuries, ADHD, dyslexia, bipolar disorder, autism, emotional disturbances, and hearing impairments. My role is to provide students with speech (articulation, stuttering) and language (listening, speaking, reading writing) disabilities with strategies they can use to improve their specific areas of deficit. Because my students are high schoolers, they have a strong awareness of their disabilities. They want to do well in school so that they can go off to college or job training programs after they graduate, but often feel that they have tried "everything" and are just unable to learn. That feeling of inadequacy can sometimes make them unmotivated and give them a feeling of embarrassment and failure.
