Research has shown that in order for students to actively think and engage in mathematics they need to be comfortable taking risks and trying varying solutions. Working in a notebook alone does not allow students to collaborate with each other or quickly erase mistakes so that they can try again. To properly engage, they need to be working in groups at a whiteboard. The classroom I acquired is older and does not have sufficient whiteboard space for all students. This wish for a whiteboard is an absolute necessity in the classroom.
