My students are freshmen that are reading below grade level for the most part, some as low as fourth grade all the way up to eighth grade reading level. They are hard-working students who will try reading anything I put in front of them. Earlier this year I asked them what book they wanted to read this year, if money were not an object and they almost unanimously replied Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. After some prodding, they admitted they wanted to re-read the book or read it for the first time after watching the film. A light bulb went off for me with this however. Our school has recently moved to common core standards which means we have a little more room to choose texts. I could read the second book in the series with them and cover four different stories from The Odyssey, which is on the curriculum map. I know my students will enjoy the book and making connections with Homer's classic epic will be easier for my struggling readers.
