Our school is made up of students from 40 different countries who speak over 38 different languages. English is often not their first language and visuals are sometimes the only means to understanding a concept. I can't put into words how crucial hands on activities are for these students and their education. My 7th graders have been funneled through too many schools that put science curriculum on the back-burner. Before reaching the 7th grade the only time they saw any science curriculum was as a "filler" between math and reading. I want to make science come alive for these students and spark a love for this subject. Many of my students don't realize that many of the careers they find so interesting are actually science related! Being a chef requires the use of chemistry, inventing video games is all about computer science, and building most things involves some sort of engineering! I think it is so important to increase interest in careers that involve science and engineering!
