Finding new, unseen, exciting and engaging materials to use in small groups that keeps our students on task can be difficult. We have found essential materials that we know can be used to enhance early literacy and math skills during guided and independent practice of small group instruction. Students will interact with these materials on a daily basis.
The poems give them real, concrete examples of word study words in authentic ways. The poems students will be reading encourage the development of fluency, phonemic awareness and structure of poetry. Students will have a poem each week to practice reading and will look for examples of their word study patterns in their poem each week.
The math tools will be used to help students develop number sense by providing a frame to work with numbers to build groups of tens and ones. The number puzzles will help students to see the different ways to compose and decompose numbers and build equations to develop fact fluency.
In the small group setting, we plan to extend the sense of community that is developed in the classroom by adding a small carpet. This will provide a comfortable area for students to gather with their teacher to work as a community of learners.
