My students vary in their personalities, abilities, and limitations. We work in a cluster program on the south side of Chicago. This school serves approximately 300 students, 67.7% of whom receive special education services. Over three-fourths of students are of low socioeconomic status. In terms of ethnic and racial composition, 67.7% of students are Latino, so emphasis has been placed on culturally relevant teaching. This year marks the start of a newly constructed music program that currently serves all students who receive Special Education services, and General Education students in grades from Kindergarten to 5th grade. Students are very excited to have music and love to play music. The program is especially important for the students who receive Special Education services and have responded to the program positively. So far, students are learning to sing and listen critically to songs that reflect Hispanic culture.
