My students are from poor homes with loving parents who do the best they can to provide for their family. I have parents who take time off from work to come to parent conferences during the school day. They would give anything to see their children not have to struggle like they have struggled unsuccessfully to make ends meet. Over 87% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. All of our students have access to a free, school sponsored breakfast. With the help of a local food bank, we send food home with students to help meet their nutritional needs. Some attend school in donated school uniforms. They come in to class excited to be here and ready to try their best. I listen to tales of their home lives, and I am amazed to find them so positive and loving. They need our help if they are to overcome the poverty of their heritage. They need good academic skills like math and reading along with technology skills. Not outdated technology, but interactive technology.
