My students need a makerspace that they can utilize to expand and shape their learning. Makerspaces contain various supplies, like art supplies, craft supplies tools, manipulatives, etc. which allow students the flexibility to explore and create which enhances what they learn in class. This Makerspaces will help encourage creativity in my students which will help them develop better problem-solving and collaborative skills which they will need throughout their lifetime. Makerspaces allow students to choose the materials they want to use to illustrate their learning. For instance, for a 6th grade Planetary Science unit, students may use the makerspace materials to make a scale model of the planets. Perhaps they would use the cloth measuring tape to measure the diameter of the planet (to scale) then use cardboard, cardboard scissors, hot glue, markers and rubber bands to create the planet. Students might also use the makerspace materials to build a model of an animal or plant cell for 7th grade. Perhaps they would use a shoe box, glue, pipe cleaners, paper clips, crayons and paper bags to create their model and represent all the components of a cell to demonstrate their learning. All teachers in the building will be invited to bring their classes to utilize the school-wide makerspace, which will be housed in the Library Media Center. The Makerspace will be used by teachers of all grades and subjects. It will be open during school hours and available for after school clubs to utilize as well.
