I teach in a relatively new urban high school, where 100% of our students receive free and reduced price lunch, and over 85% are second language learners. Many of our students feel ready to take on the challenge of college, but we want to prepare them to truly complete with other college ready students, and truly succeed. Building a new science program is a slow process. Teaching science often requires specialized equipment, and ingenuity and creativity can only take you so far. My students are very tolerant of my "alternative sources" for materials, but sometimes, only the real thing will get the necessary results, and prepare my students for the sciences they will encounter in the future!
