Most of my students are from low socio economic backgrounds and receive free or reduced rate meals. The majority of my students are English learners and few have parents or older siblings that have graduated from college. Unfortunately, many of my students have struggled in their households to obtain a large selection and variety of reading materials since childhood, which has contributed to poor reading and writing abilities, as well as poor communication skills. Even though my students have had difficulty with the science academy language, most of them want to succeed at our school because of our high academic expectations and diverse selection of core and elective classes. In my life science classes and MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) elective class students are exposed to a rich level of critical thinking lessons. In addition, students are given many opportunities to collaborate and communicate with each other, especially in MESA where creativity is emphasized.
