My fifth graders let me share my love for math and science every time I stand in front of them. Being a teacher at a Title 1 school is the best job ever, but it looks different from what I imagined a math and science teacher would look like. In my re-imagined role that embraces student-centered activities and technology, I am more coach and facilitator than lecturer. That’s what makes it rewarding. Two important ways I build foundational skills for higher math and science are: 1) Encouraging students to investigate the world around them using math, science, and digital tools, and 2) Building student confidence. Students that play, explore, and investigate big ideas, develop an appreciation for math and science. Once you get a student to see the beauty of math and science, they can’t unsee it and become intrinsically driven to achieve. DonorsChoose projects help make that happen.
