The US Dept. of Education attendance initiative theme is "We Belong." These twenty two flags will be hung from the ceiling of our cafeteria/auditorium for all of our students and their families to see during meals and events. We have either musical performances or awards ceremonies twenty times a year. For both the students and parents to see their country of origin flag will give them a sense of inclusion and belonging in their new home. This will help foster home to school connections and encourage participation when they feel they truly are members of the learning community
While sitting at breakfast and lunch, they will see the flags representing their class- and schoolmates from all over the globe which will inspire learning about other countries and continents. More importantly, they will learn about each other's cultures and realize that we are One Human Family learning and growing together.
The flags will also improve the aesthetics in the cafeteria. The bright colors and motifs are interesting to observe while eating. The flags will also be good conversation starters. Hanging the flags above the diners can help diminish the loudness of the room. This will add a calming effect to the dining experience. Everyone can benefit from this especially those students with sensitivity to loud noises.
