I am a new teacher and my classroom does not yet have all the tools and supplies my students need. My classroom needs materials so my students will be able to do the math and communicate their math ideas. As IB learners, I encourage my students to be caring, risk-takers, problem solvers and good communicators. When I introduced the classic Handshake Problem (which I modified to the Fistbump Problem to make it relatable to the global pandemic) at the start of the school year, almost all of my classes were able to use the problem-solving strategies Solve a Simpler Problem, Act Out the Problem, Draw a Diagram, Use a Table, Look for a Pattern and Make a Generalization to solve the given problem successfully! I am truly excited to see how far my students will grow this year, with the help of the supplies donated by DonorsChoose and the Nevada Department of Education.
