Our schools is over 90% free and reduced lunch. Most of my students face immense challenges to their learning in addition to poverty, such as learning disabilities, ADD, hearing impairments, developmental delays, and parents at home who do not speak English. In spite of these challenges, we are making great gains this year in reading. My students have even come up to me and said, "Reading used to be horrible. Now I like it." Being a turn around school with Race to the Top funding, we work hard to build character traits that will make us successful in our future. Reading biographies this year has allowed my students to make connections to the people they are reading about. They are realizing the character traits a leader possesses, and are striving to be leaders in the classroom and school.
