Our students have become fascinated by how people lead action to speak out for their beliefs. In our next unit of study, according to the curriculum we were given, our students will study sports and civil rights. Our feeling as teachers is that our students need more. They need to study how the Civil Rights Movement impacted not only sports, but the world. Therefore, we want to change the curriculum as given and study material that meets them where their interests lie, while still meeting the requirements of the grade level standards. Our goal is to expand their study of Civil Rights from just sports to Civil Rights and the World. "The March" book will enable them to visualize how people use their voice to impact the world. We will then leverage this study into students engaging in civic action on a project they believe in. Reading about John Lewis's experiences, and seeing where it has brought him, will be the perfect kick start to an action-oriented unit.
