Great books teach more than just how to read; they teach us important lessons about life. The two books I have requested for my class have the potential to do both in these important formative years. The lessons to be learned in the two books I'm requesting are 1) embracing one's identity and 2) appreciating what we have. "The Name Jar" will help my students embrace each other's uniqueness as well as their own. It is the story of a new girl in school whose traditional Korean name is difficult for others to pronounce. The book follows her journey as she plans to change it to fit in at first, but comes to embrace the beauty of her true name and its meaning. "Those Shoes" will help my students learn to appreciate the difference between needs and wants, and also consider that we're all dealing with our own unique challenges. It follows the story of a boy who wants to fit in by getting the "right" pair of shoes although the price is out of reach. He comes to appreciate that he already has all he needs.
