I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of high school students. My classes are comprised of students from numerous nationalities, cultures, and socioeconomic situations. Their personalities are different, but they all have a common desire to do great things. Unfortunately, many of them are convinced that none of the great things they're going to do will require any math. My goal is to help develop my students into persistent problem solvers, learning math along the way. Presenting my students with real-life problems that need to be solved, or questions that need to be answered, generates a need/usefulness for mathematics. That is a far better setting for learning mathematics than learning a particular math concept and then doing some contrived exercises. Students respond significantly better to problem-based learning because it has meaning and they can see the relevance.
