I work at an urban inner city school on the east side of Indianapolis, Indiana. More than 85% of my students are on free and reduced lunch. Forty percent of the students who attend the school in which I teach are students who have special needs and are in the special education program. More than half of my students come from single parent homes. My school is a new charter school who is committed to preparing our students for college. My students are inquisitive but they lack trust and it is because of that, that it is important that we strive to build positive and healthy relationships with our students so that they can trust us to do our best in educating them. My students are creative and while they are not always on target academically they often show their gifts and talents in other ways such as through athletics, artistic ability, drama, dance, and music. It is my goal to use those strengths that my students possess in order to help ensure that they continue to grow academically.
