Many of my students have already been through a significant number of adverse childhood experiences (otherwise known as trauma) in their short lives. Exposure to traumatic events can adversely affect attention, memory and cognition and reduces children's ability to focus, organize and process information. This has obvious impacts on school performance and lasting effects on health and well-being. Yoga has many benefits for people who've experienced trauma, studies show it directly improves physical and mental health. In addition to the physical benefits of the postures, breathing calms the parasympathetic nervous system and mindfulness counteracts some of the dissociative effects of trauma. My plan is to teach a weekly yoga class after school using these Yoga Experience kits, open to all students. The class will provide students with tools to help cope with the stressors of their lives by learning to quiet their minds and stabilize their nervous systems.
