My students are eighth graders in Harlem, New York, who need all the support and encouragement that they can get in order to realize their own potential and dreams. All of the students come from low income homes (98% are eligible for free lunch). The ethnic make up of the school is 80% Hispanic, 15% Black, and 5% Arab. Most of my students speak another language than English at home, which makes it even more imperative that they read to their fullest capacity and strengthen their linguistic skills. Next year, my students will continue on to high school, and I understand the urgency of helping them develop a real love for books and the written word. Without it, their academic future of graduating high school and continuing to college is at risk. They are beautiful and smart young adults who need to be surrounded by literature that will open up new worlds and opportunities for a better future.
