Our school is located in a rural, low socioeconomic status community. Eighty-four percent of the students are on the free or reduced lunch program. Students often receive things like clothes, food, and funding for field trips from teachers and staff. Several students do not have power or running water, requiring them to shower at school. Sometimes their only hot meals come from school. I teach fourth grade reading and math to students with learning disabilities. Many of my students read significantly below their grade level (pre-kindergarten to first grade level) and my classroom library is stocked mostly with second to fourth grade level books. Seventy percent of my students are boys. They enjoy typical boy things, such as dirt bike riding, fishing, hunting, and video games. To foster a love for reading in my students, I chose books I know my students would enjoy, and would inspire them to read more.
